My OSP Survival Guide: What I Wish I Knew Before Joining a Summer Program for High School Students

by Rudayna, Dubai, UAE.

When I first got into the Oxford Scholars Program (OSP), I was beyond excited — and a little nervous. Two weeks in the UK with people I’d never met before? Attending university-style lectures, working on team projects, and participating in all kinds of random activities — all on the campus of one of the world’s most prestigious universities? It sounded amazing, but I had no clue what to expect.

Now that I’ve experienced it myself, here’s what I wish someone had told me before joining one of the most unforgettable summer programs for high school students:

1. Actually use your free time.

You’ll have more free time than you think. Go explore Oxford, grab coffee with new friends, or run through a park. Some of my best OSP memories happened when we had zero plans.

(Also, bring comfy shoes — there’s a lot of walking.)

2. BUT manage your time well (so you don’t over-stress).

It’s tempting to spend every second out in the city, but pacing yourself is key. Block out time to focus on your final project and attend the optional holistic development workshops — they’re incredibly helpful. The sessions on university applications and personal statements, in particular, were game-changers. I learned things I never would’ve figured out on my own.

Finding the balance between fun and productivity is what makes programs like OSP so unique and rewarding.

3. Say yes to new activities and be open to new people.

Whether it’s punting, team challenges, or just playing cards, the moments you almost skip often turn out to be the most memorable. Some of my best nights happened with people I randomly met during lunch, breaks — even in taxis.

Pro tip: bring a deck of cards or a small game. It instantly becomes a group activity and makes it easier to bond with new people. Plus, someone will definitely teach you a game you’ve never played before.

4. Don’t leave anything to the last day.

Seriously — whether it’s wrapping up your project or souvenir shopping, do it early. The final day sneaks up fast, and the last thing you want is to spend it scrambling.

Bonus Tip: Get a UK SIM card — ASAP.

A UK SIM card will save you time, stress, and money. Whether it’s looking up directions, coordinating with your group, or just checking the OSP schedule while off campus, having data is a huge help. I would’ve been lost without it — literally.

Final Thoughts

If you’re thinking about applying to a summer program for high school students like OSP — go for it. And once you’re there, soak it all in. The program flies by faster than you think, and it’ll be one of the most impactful learning experiences you’ll ever have.
